The phone-shot ad that beat our studio shoot

We spent two days on a polished studio shoot. A 20-second video filmed on a phone in a kitchen outsold it three to one.

Margin strategy team

For a home brand launch, we booked a studio, a stylist and a crew. The footage was beautiful. In the same week, one of our strategists filmed a short clip on her phone of the product in her own kitchen.

What happened

The phone video cost less to buy each customer and kept people watching longer. It looked like something a friend would post, not an advert, so people gave it a few more seconds before scrolling past.

Why it worked

The first two seconds did the heavy lifting. It opened on a real problem, a cluttered counter, before the product appeared. The studio version opened on a perfect product shot, which looked like every other ad in the feed.

What we changed

We now test the hook, not the polish. Each new ad tries one idea in its opening line or image. The studio footage is still useful, but we use it for retargeting and product pages where people already know the brand.

If you only have budget for one thing, spend it on more ideas, not more lighting.
